The Hopkins Girls Tennis team is for grades 7-12, with both Varsity and JV teams. Tryouts occur during the first week of practice to determine team placement, but cuts are rare. Players may switch between Varsity and JV during the season.
Practices take place at the High School courts next to Tanglen Elementary. NMS players walk over after school, while WMS players take the activity bus to the High School, which drops them off near the West entrances of the High School (by the football stadium).
Coaches will inform players about transportation for away matches, including whether a bus is provided or if carpooling is needed. For home matches requiring early release, coaches will notify the schools. Middle school players may need to arrange their own transportation to the High School courts; otherwise, transportation will follow the practice day schedule.
Girls should have their own racquet and court shoes. The Booster Club may have a few racquets for players to borrow, please contact us to inquire. Other cross training shoes would be helpful for conditioning, but are not required. There will be a uniform for purchase chosen by the team captains. Optional team merchandise is also available for purchase.
Practices and matches take place Monday-Friday, with one Saturday Varsity invitational. The season will follow an approximate schedule of:
First week of August: Captain's practices for both JV & Varsity
Second week of August: Tryouts and practice for both JV & Varsity
Third week of August thru end of September: Matches (2-4 per week) and practices on remaining days (for both JV & Varsity)
Early October: Sections for Varsity Team
Mid-late October: Sections and State for qualifying Varsity Individuals
End of October: End of season banquet for team
The booster club organizes events like 1-2 team meals, and the end-of-season banquet. More details about a parent event at the start of the season will be shared.
Coaches communicate to players all information about matches and practice schedules, it is expected that this information is relayed to families. Captains will communicate changes to practice and match details via a GroupMe channel. Parents have a separate GroupMe channel for updates on events, snacks, and schedule changes. The team's website includes all information on schedules, volunteer opportunities, uniforms, photos, and team gatherings. A calendar includes all information from the Lake Conference, where all match schedules are found.
Some players choose to take lessons through clubs, such as Williston Fitness, Lifetime, Minnetonka Tennis Club. Players can join USTA or UTR to to find match play opportunities. Participation costs vary by venue, but membership is not required. Some events are single matches, others weekend tournaments. There are several MN colleges that offer tennis camps during the summer. Players also meet before school to lift weights at the RAC 1-2 days per week along with the boys team. (View the calendar for dates and times)
The booster club supports players through fundraising events that cover costs like the end-of-season banquet, coaches' gifts, team events and special coaching requests.
